Our Favourite Site

Our very favourite site is shown above, but no further details given - once a haven of peace and quiet, it is becoming busier by the year, so the fewer people that know about it, the better!!  I believe there is no more beautiful place on earth.  It is fortunate in enjoying its own micro-climate - often, when there is rain over the rest of the country, the sun shines here.  There are clean sandy beaches, sparkling water, rocks for climbing, hills to walk and islands to explore.  The site has no electricity.  Water and  very basic toilet/showers are available in the farmyard, but it is totally relaxed and free of rules, the farmer and his family are very friendly and it is wonderful!

Beach Activities at High Season

We have visited very many other sites, both in the UK and in Ireland, France, Holland and Germany.  Below are listed some of the UK sites we have particularly enjoyed or found useful.

SCOTLAND

New England Bay, nr Stranraer - Caravan Club Site - relaxed site on sandy bay, ideal for swimming and watersports, lovely rural, rolling countryside, and good toilet blocks.  Pretty fishing villages nearby.  This is one of our favourite sites.

CarradaleCarradale, Mull of Kintyre - Caravan Club Site - another relaxed site on a sandy beach.  Beautiful views, mountains and sea.  Interesting little golf course nearby.  Good place to spot marine wild life - seals, dolphins, sharks.  Toilet/shower facilities  adequate - another of our favourites.

Twenty Shilling Wood, nr Comrie - convenient site in central Perthshire, which has always been able to offer overnight stops at short notice.

Rosemarkie, nr Inverness - Caravan and Camping Club - a few minutes walk along the beach Rosemarkie, Black Islefrom Chanonry lighthouse on the Black Isle, this is the place to come if you are interested in dolphins, which make an almost guaranteed daily appearance, close to the shore, often splashing and jumping.  Toilets are not wonderful, but adequate, and similarly the pitches.  Hookups have been introduced recently.

North Ledaig, nr Oban - Caravan Club - large, well maintained site, with good toilet facilities, but little privacy - set out in tiered  rows, with a pebbly beach and wonderful views across to Mull and Moidart.  A useful site about 10 minutes drive north of Oban, it is a good centre for touring the West Highlands and for sailing out to some of the Hebridean islands.

Achnahaird, nr AchiltibuieAchnahaird, nr Achiltibuie - large, open, very relaxed site in wonderful scenery looking towards the Torridon mountains - miles from anywhere down a single track road, but glorious empty sands. No hookups or showers,  toilets adequate.

Kilberry, nr Tarbert - few pitches left these days for tourers, but great at low season.  A lovely friendly atmosphere at high season.  Safe boating.  Single track driving for about 15 miles over the hills from Loch Fyne, and looking across the water to the Paps of Jura.  Toilet/shower facilities are basic.

Sango Sands, Durness - beautiful golden beach at foot of cliffs, but approach roads not very caravan friendly to say the least - we had to back the caravan some distance along a narrow single track, twisty road, after meeting a convoy of Italian Camper Vans, who were either unwilling or unable to back their vehicles!  However, the front row of caravans has a lovely position at the top of the cliffs.

Luss, Loch Lomond - Caravan and Camping - lovely setting on the Bonnie, Bonnie Banks, and good toilets/washrooms, although some of the pitches are a bit muddy.  A handy stopover in good weather, but right on the Tourist Route and pretty busy in the summer months.

Dalchalm, nr Brora - Caravan Club - a fairly small site, bordering a first rate golf course, which separates the site from miles of empty golden sands.  Good toilet/shower facilities.

Sands, nr Gairloch - a fairly busy site, with a well stocked shop, children's playground and seasonal activities - popular with families.  Hookups available, although there are quite a number of pitches among the dunes without electricity and more privacy.  Plenty of clean toilet facilities and sandy beach.

Kintra Farm, Islay - in the dunes, immediately behind a beautiful 3 mile stretch of sand, we loved it here despite the fact that it rained solidly for 10 days, with hardly a moment's respite.  However, the surf was glorious, the beach was golden and deserted, and there was an excellent restaurant on the site itself, based in a converted barn on the farmstead.

ENGLAND

Bo Peep Farm, near Banbury - Caravan Club Site - we have watched this site develop, from fairly small beginnings into the popular site it is today.  The Washing and Toilet facilities are first class, there are excellent dog walks around the site, which is divided into several large, grassy fields in open countryside.  Now popular for weekenders, we used to use this site for overnight stops when we wanted to be about two hours drive from home - booking requirements at high season have prevented us from visiting there this year.

The Ashes Adults Only Site, nr KendalThe Ashes, near Kendal - Adults only, what bliss! - a small, quiet site in beautiful countryside - friendly wardens, immaculate toilets and showers - booking often necessary, apparently, but we managed an overnight stop at short notice.  Convenient for M6.Low Wood Site, nr Kendal

Low Wood, near Kendal - Caravan Club Site - large, wooded site, usually able to offer overnight stops and convenient for the north/south drive.  Within half an hour's drive of Windermere and other Lakes.  We stop here regularly.

Goodnight, Caravanners
